Can bad posture lead to back pain?

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

I have been working with clients with back pain for over 10 years. It is such a prevalent issue in society that over 85% of people will experience it at some point in their lives. It can be debilitating, exhausting, and emotionally wearing. This profound impact on our health is why I chose to specialise in the spine.

But can bad posture really lead to back pain?

A man form behind with a glowing spine, showing that the spine is the foundation of the body.
The spine is your bodies foundation.

Think of our spine like the foundation of our “house”. It offers a lot of the structure and support your body needs. If you were building a house, you would want a nice strong and solid foundation, you wouldn’t build on a weak or uneven one. The same goes for your back- you want to have nice strong core strength to keep your spine erect & reduce extra pressure on your discs and even muscular tension. And as a society bent over computers & phones, driving in cars, a lot of stress, not a lot of sleep, and a lot of sitting, leads to bad posture and causes our foundation to weaken. This doesn’t just happen overnight, this builds up over months and years (I am not including sudden accidents or congenital variations in this).

If we continue this lifestyle, our core strength weakens, we develop uneven muscular tension in our back leading to knots and we are in a constant state of stress. Unfortunately, when we go to try and straighten up or lift a heavy load or even reach down to the flush the toilet we can strain our muscles or our discs that act as shock absorbers can herniate. Ouch! Bad posture can also lead to constipation, heartburn, stress incontinence and sleep issues. Yes, it can lead to all this and more.
